Preparing for Your Skin Cancer Checks

Upon arriving for your Dermascan skin check you may be asked to fill out a patient registration form if you are attending our clinics for the first time.  It is important that you allow enough time to find parking and to complete any necessary paperwork prior to your appointment.

You will meet one of our lovely Melanographers who is a registered nurse who has been trained to perform skin checks and identify skin cancers using our Fotofinder technology.  You will be required to remove your clothing down to your underwear and the Melanographer will proceed to look over your skin closely.  Any lesion that they are concerned about will be photographed with a high resolution camera.  If you have opted for the Total Body Mapping your whole body will be photographed in a series of images.

It is recommended that you present for your skin check without any fake tan and free of any makeup.  We also require that you do not wear nail polish to your appointment or have any fake nails.

The staff are very experienced and generally stick to the appointment times.  At the time of booking we often do not know how many lesions each patient may have and occasionally the skin check may run overtime.  We thank you for your patience at these times.

A report, including any images taken will be prepared and stored on our secure server.  A copy of this report will be emailed to you and a copy to your GP.

If you have a lesion that has features of a skin cancer such as a BCC or an SCC then you may choose to have that treated by your GP or you can request an appointment to see Mr Salerno, our Plastic Surgeon.  You will need a referral from your GP to see the surgeon.  If you have a lesion that is suspicious for a Melanoma we will arrange for an urgent appointment with the surgeon.

Sometimes we may request that a lesion be monitored and this can be done by the patient themselves, or by the GP or occasionally we will arrange for the patients to return to Dermascan in 3-6 months ( free of charge ) for one of our Melanographers to review a lesion.

FAQs about Skin Cancer Checks

Skin cancer checks are examinations performed to detect early signs of skin cancer. These checks are important as they help identify potential issues before they develop into more serious conditions. Regular skin cancer checks can lead to early treatment and better outcomes.

During a skin check, the specialist will examine your skin thoroughly, looking for any abnormalities such as unusual moles or lesions. If necessary, further tests or biopsies may be performed. This process is designed to detect skin cancer early and provide appropriate treatment options.

The frequency of skin cancer checks depends on individual risk factors and previous skin health history. Generally, it is recommended to have a skin check annually, or more frequently if advised. Regular checks help in early detection and effective management of skin cancer.

If skin cancer is detected during a skin cancer check, the findings and recommend a treatment plan will be discussed. Early detection through a skin check significantly improves treatment outcomes. Follow-up appointments and further tests may be required based on the diagnosis.

Availability for same-day appointments for skin cancer checks varies by clinic. Contact our skin check clinics to inquire about availability and schedule an appointment. We aim to accommodate urgent needs whenever possible.

Preparation for a skin check involves avoiding sun exposure and refraining from applying lotions or makeup on the day of your appointment. Ensure you provide your full history of your skin health and any concerns you may have.
